Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Wildwood Natural Area is a 628-acre expanse of old-growth Douglas-fir forest located within Forest Park in Portland, Oregon. The area represents one of the largest urban forests in the United States and is characterized by dense stands of towering conifers, moss-covered trees, and an understory rich with native shrubs and wildflowers. It is situated along the Wildwood Trail, a well-maintained path that runs through Forest Park, offering an immersive forest experience just minutes from downtown Portland. Ecologically, the natural area supports a variety of wildlife, including black-tailed deer, barred owls, and several species of salamanders and amphibians, reflecting the region's temperate rainforest habitat. Historically, the land was preserved in the early 20th century as part of Portland’s initiative to maintain green spaces and protect watershed health. Recreational opportunities center on hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography, with the trail providing access points to scenic viewpoints and quiet woodland settings. The natural area's appeal lies in its accessibility for urban residents seeking nature escapes and its role as an important ecological corridor that helps maintain biodiversity within city limits. Interpretive signs along the trail inform visitors about the area's history, ecology, and conservation efforts. Despite being close to urban development, Wildwood Natural Area maintains a peaceful ambiance, drawing outdoor enthusiasts looking for a tranquil but engaging experience in a largely untamed natural setting.
