Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Viveros de Coyoacán covers approximately 38 hectares in the Coyoacán borough of Mexico City. Originally established in the early 20th century as a plant nursery to produce trees for reforestation in urban areas, it has evolved into a popular public park and ecological refuge within the sprawling metropolis. The site functions as a botanical garden, with greenhouses and propagation areas supporting various native and exotic plant species. Its well-maintained lawns, paved walking paths, and shaded areas attract joggers, walkers, families, and birdwatchers. The park is home to a number of urban wildlife species, notably many bird species that find refuge in its trees and water features, making it a favored spot for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts. Viveros de Coyoacán also hosts cultural and environmental education events, promoting awareness about urban reforestation and biodiversity. Notable landmarks within the park include its large greenhouse complex and several sculptures and fountains that add aesthetic value. Accessible by public transit, the park offers an important natural getaway and community space within a major city. Visitors appreciate both its calm atmosphere and wide open areas, making it ideal for casual outdoor recreation, exercise, and family outings.
