Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Uvas Canyon County Park covers a modest area in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, providing visitors with access to a cool forest environment dominated by oak woodlands, Douglas fir, bay laurels, madrone, and redwoods. The park’s geography is marked by rugged terrain, streams, and cascades that feed into Uvas Creek. Its lush riparian zones support diverse native flora and fauna, including various bird species, amphibians, and small mammals. Established in 1962, the park has a long history as a recreational site, originally part of ranch land and later preserved for public enjoyment. Today, it is a favored destination for hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, and photography. The network of well-maintained trails highlights scenic waterfalls such as Canyon Falls, Basin Falls, and Lower Falls. The relatively mild climate and shaded paths make it accessible to visitors year-round, although springtime is ideal for waterfall viewing when the stream flows are highest. The park offers family-friendly experiences with several picnic areas, restrooms, and easy-to-moderate trails suitable for casual hikers. Its location just south of Morgan Hill makes it convenient for weekend outings, nature walks, and birding excursions, providing an accessible natural retreat within reach of Silicon Valley and the South Bay.
