Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Upper Red Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) encompasses more than 58,000 acres of wetland complexes, marshes, open water, and forest lands surrounding the northern part of Upper Red Lake in Beltrami County, Minnesota. It forms a significant part of the Red Lake Peatland, one of the largest peat wetland complexes in the United States. This protected area provides critical habitat for a wide range of wildlife species including waterfowl, wading birds, deer, bear, and numerous fish species. The area is particularly famous among hunters for its productive duck and goose hunting seasons, drawing outdoor enthusiasts each fall. Additionally, fishermen visit for walleye and northern pike in the lake’s shallow bays and channels.
