About Undara Volcanic National Park

Undara Volcanic National Park is renowned for its extensive lava tube system formed by ancient volcanic activity, offering unique geological features and diverse wildlife in a tropical savannah environment.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in northern Queensland, Australia, Undara Volcanic National Park protects one of the longest and best-preserved lava tube systems in the world. The park's geological formation dates back approximately 190,000 years, originating from volcanic eruptions that produced vast lava flows which cooled and solidified to create expansive underground tunnels. These lava tubes provide a rare opportunity to explore volcanic landscapes formed by subterranean lava flow, with some tubes extending over 160 kilometers in length. The park is situated in a tropical savannah climate characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons, supporting open eucalypt woodlands, native grasses, and a variety of wildlife including wallabies, lace monitors, and diverse bird species. Visitors can explore guided tours through the cooled lava tubes and experience walking trails across the park that showcase volcanic cones, rugged landscapes, and native vegetation. Historically, the region holds cultural significance for the local Jakara Jukurrpa Aboriginal people, whose traditions and stories enrich visitor understanding of the land. Key recreation opportunities include self-guided walks, wildlife viewing, photography, and camping. The Undara Experience visitors’ center provides insights into the park's natural history, volcanic heritage, and ancient ecosystems. Its distinctive volcanic features and remote location make it a compelling destination for geology enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventurers seeking a unique outdoor experience off the well-trodden path.
