Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sodus Bay Preserve is a significant conservation area located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in Wayne County, New York. Covering a range of ecosystems, it protects approximately 780 acres including woodlands, freshwater wetlands, open fields, and a large portion of Sodus Bay's shoreline. The preserve is managed primarily by The Nature Conservancy and plays a vital role in protecting regional biodiversity. Its geography includes gently rolling terrain with low ridges and flat wetlands that provide essential habitat for migratory birds, waterfowl, fish, and several rare plant species.
Historically, the area was utilized for agriculture and fishing, but conservation efforts in recent decades have maintained and restored much of the natural environment. Key recreational opportunities include over six miles of hiking trails that traverse mixed hardwood forests, marsh edges, and shoreline views. Birdwatchers frequently visit to observe species like herons, ospreys, and waterfowl, especially during migration seasons. The preserve also supports limited fishing, canoeing, and kayaking on the calm waters of Sodus Bay.
Visitors appreciate the quiet natural setting with trails that offer opportunities to explore both upland and wetland environments. Educational programs and guided walks are occasionally offered to highlight the area's ecological importance. While the preserve does not have camping facilities, it is an attractive destination for day hikers and nature enthusiasts interested in seeing a rich variety of habitats in one accessible location near Lake Ontario's shore.
