About Sierra de Chiapas Biosphere Reserve

The Sierra de Chiapas Biosphere Reserve protects a diverse mountainous region in southern Mexico known for its rich cloud forests, endemic wildlife, and cultural heritage, offering immersive nature-based recreation and exploration opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the southern state of Chiapas, Mexico, the Sierra de Chiapas Biosphere Reserve encompasses a rugged mountainous landscape that serves as a critical refuge for cloud forests and tropical highland ecosystems. Spanning elevations from roughly 500 to over 2,700 meters, the reserve supports exceptional biodiversity, including numerous endemic plant and animal species. The terrain is deeply dissected by rivers and valleys, creating a mosaic of habitats such as montane rainforests, pine-oak forests, and riparian zones. Historically, the area has been home to indigenous communities who have maintained traditional land-use practices compatible with conservation. Designated as a biosphere reserve in 1998, it balances environmental protection with sustainable development, promoting eco-tourism and educational initiatives. Key recreational opportunities include hiking scenic trails through cloud forest habitats, birdwatching rare species such as the emerald toucanet and resplendent quetzal, and exploring archaeological sites scattered in the mountains. The region’s volcanic soils also contribute to its lushness and support local coffee plantations. Visitors are attracted by the reserve’s relatively intact wilderness, peaceful ambiance, and cultural richness. The reserve's network of trails, viewpoints, and visitor centers provides access to diverse environments with opportunities for nature photography, wildlife observation, and immersion in the biodiversity hotspot of Mesoamerica. Seasonal rainfall fosters dense forests but may also restrict access in the wettest months. The Sierra de Chiapas Biosphere Reserve remains a vital sanctuary for conservation while supporting community-based tourism.
