Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sherrardspark Wood covers approximately 74 hectares (183 acres) and is one of the largest remnants of ancient woodland in the Welwyn Garden City area. The wood is characterized by a diverse mix of broadleaved trees, including oak, hornbeam, and birch, sustaining a rich habitat for bird species, insects, and small mammals. Sherrardspark Wood has a long history, with parts of it dating back over 400 years; it was historically managed as coppice woodland. Today, the wood serves as a vital green space offering tranquil walking and wildlife observation opportunities. The site features a network of well-maintained trails weaving through the dense canopy and alongside open glades. Among the notable landmarks is a small serpentine pond that supports amphibians and dragonflies during warmer months. Sherrardspark Wood is actively managed by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council to balance public access with conservation. Visitors enjoy peaceful walks, seasonal birdwatching, and occasionally spotting roe deer or woodpeckers. The wood is popular among local families, dog walkers, and nature photographers, offering an accessible outdoor escape right next to the urban environment of Welwyn Garden City. Educational activities and guided walks are sometimes held to increase awareness of this important natural and historic area.
