Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Sequatchie Valley is a geologically unique feature in Tennessee, stretching approximately 65 miles from north to south. It is bordered by the Cumberland Plateau on both sides, creating a long, narrow valley with steep, forested walls and a flat valley floor through which the Sequatchie River flows. The valley is known for its rich biodiversity, including both terrestrial and aquatic habitats that host a variety of species. Historically, the Sequatchie Valley was home to Indigenous peoples and later became a hub for agriculture and mining activities in the 19th and 20th centuries.
