Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Savage Gulf State Natural Area is a remarkable 15,590-acre preserved region in Tennessee, known for its dramatic geological features, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural history. The area is part of the South Cumberland State Park and comprises one of the most stunning examples of a scenic wilderness area in the eastern United States. It features deep gorges carved by the Collins and Savage Creeks, with cliffs rising as high as 800 feet. The terrain is characterized by a mix of hardwood forests and sandstone bluffs, providing habitat for a variety of plant and animal species. Notably, the area is known for endangered species such as Cumberland rosemary and Virginia big-eared bats. In terms of recreation, Savage Gulf offers over 50 miles of some of the most demanding and rewarding hiking trails in the region, including views from the Stone Door, a massive cliff line equipped with a narrow crevice. Visitation is driven by the allure of exploring pristine nature, the mystery of ancient Native American rock shelters, and the challenge provided by some of the most rugged and breathtaking hiking in the southeast.
