About Santa Fe River Preserve

Santa Fe River Preserve is a conservation area protecting vital riparian habitats along the Santa Fe River, offering opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and reconnecting with New Mexico’s river ecosystems.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Santa Fe River Preserve is a protected natural area located along the upper reaches of the Santa Fe River in northern New Mexico. Covering land managed primarily by The Nature Conservancy, this preserve protects one of the last stretches of a functioning river and wetland ecosystem in the region. The preserve’s landscape is characterized by river willows, cottonwood forests, wetlands, and upland juniper and piñon habitats. It serves as critical habitat for native wildlife species including southwestern willow flycatchers, beavers, migratory birds, and various fish species. The preserve lies within the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and features a mix of gentle riparian corridors and rocky outcrops. Historically, the Santa Fe River supported local communities and indigenous groups, though water diversions and urban growth have diminished its flow over time. Today, the preserve is important for ecological restoration efforts, preserving biodiversity, improving water quality, and maintaining open space near the city of Santa Fe. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy several short trails that provide peaceful nature walks with opportunities for quiet wildlife viewing and photography. The preserve’s accessibility close to Santa Fe appeals to day visitors seeking solitude from the urban environment. Seasonal variations create a changing landscape, with spring wildflowers, migrating birds in the fall, and serene winter scenes. While not a large recreation area compared to national parks, it remains a valuable protected green corridor supporting conservation education and low-impact outdoor activities.
