Rock Springs Conservation Area spans approximately 2,154 acres in Macon County, Illinois, featuring a rich mix of prairie, woodland, and wetlands. Originally a quarry site, the area was reclaimed and transformed into a natural habitat that supports a wide variety of plants and wildlife. The terrain includes gentle hills, mature forests, open grasslands, and a network of well-maintained multi-use trails totaling more than 25 miles. Visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding on designated bridle trails, and wildlife observation, particularly the seasonal presence of migratory birds and several native Illinois species. The conservation area also contains several rare native plant species and offers an important habitat corridor in Central Illinois. Rock Springs Nature Center provides interpretive exhibits and educational programs, enhancing the visitor experience. Locally significant for its heritage and outdoor recreation values, the area includes scenic overlooks and quiet spots along creeks and woodlands. Its proximity to Decatur offers convenient access for day trips and family outings.
