Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
River View Natural Area spans approximately 600 acres along the western banks of the Willamette River in Oregon, just south of downtown Portland. This protected natural area features diverse habitats including mixed coniferous forests, riparian zones, and open meadows, supporting an abundance of native plant and animal species. Established in 1969, the preserve was created to protect regionally important natural habitats and provide public access to outdoor recreation near an urban environment. Visitors can explore over 6.5 miles of maintained trails that wind through old-growth Douglas fir groves, oak woodlands, and wetlands that nurture beavers, river otters, and migratory birds. Key wildlife include bald eagles, great blue herons, and black-tailed deer. The area is known for its scenic overlooks offering panoramic views of the Willamette River and the Portland skyline. River View Natural Area also includes several historic sites linked to early river transportation and indigenous peoples of the Willamette Valley. Recreational options range from birdwatching and casual walking to trail running and seasonal fishing along the riverbanks. The natural area's proximity to Portland makes it a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a convenient nature escape with educational opportunities and interpretive signage. During fall and spring migrations, it is a hotspot for birders. The landscape changes with the seasons, from lush green summers to colorful autumn foliage, making it visually striking year-round.
