Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Rinns of Islay National Nature Reserve is located on the western coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland. It comprises a diverse mix of coastal heath, rocky shores, machair grasslands, and wetlands, creating an exceptional environment for a rich variety of flora and fauna. The reserve covers several hundred hectares of protected land, recognized for its international importance as a Special Protection Area primarily for breeding and migratory birds. Notably, it supports populations of Greenland white-fronted geese, barnacle geese, and a range of wading birds such as dunlin and greenshank. The reserve's coastal habitats are also home to marine mammals including seals and occasional sightings of otters.
