About

An amazing opportunity to get up close to the world’s 3rd largest whirlpool from the safety of a boat.

The whirlpool is caused by a large volume of water travelling through the Sound of Jura. The passage narrows, so the water takes the easiest escape route which is the mile wide gap called the Gulf of Corryvreckan. As the water travels it encounters two major obstructions that cause a change in water state. One is a 219m hole and the other is a large pinnacle of basalt rock standing some 130m. When the water passes over these impressive areas of topography it gathers speed and once at the pinnacle you witness the whirlpool effect.

Witness a variety of wildlife on route as well as tales of the Corryvreckan from our skippers.

The boat, nearly always a RIB, departs from Port Askaig and takes around 3 hours to complete.

The dates and times of these trips correspond with spring tides when a larger volume of water is passing through, creating the best experience.

Please be aware, we need a full boat of passengers booked on this trip for it to go ahead.

Adventure Tips

Dress for variable weather

Bring windproof and water-resistant layers to handle chilly sea spray and changing conditions on the water.

Arrive early at Port Askaig

Plan to be at the harbour 10-15 minutes before departure to ensure smooth boarding via the boat ladder.

Expect boat movement

The RIB is fast and may be bumpy, especially near the whirlpool – if prone to seasickness, consider medication beforehand.

Book during spring tides

Trip schedules align with spring tides for optimal whirlpool activity; check tide calendars when planning your visit.
