About Ribeira Sacra Landscape Protected Area

Ribeira Sacra is a breathtaking protected landscape along the Sil and Miño rivers in northwestern Spain, known for its dramatic river gorges, ancient terraced vineyards, rich biodiversity, and historic monasteries.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Ribeira Sacra Landscape Protected Area spans a rugged, steeply incised river valley region in the autonomous communities of Galicia and Castile and León in Spain. It is characterized by deep canyons carved by the Sil and Miño rivers, dramatic cliffs, and an extensive system of ancient terraces that support some of the oldest vineyards in Europe. These terraced vineyards produce renowned regional wines, particularly Mencía and Godello varieties. The landscape combines natural beauty with a deep cultural and historical heritage, including Romanesque churches, medieval monasteries like the Monastery of San Pedro de Rocas, and traditional rural villages. Ecologically, the area supports diverse Mediterranean and Atlantic flora and fauna, with oak, chestnut, and pine forests providing habitat for species such as the golden eagle, otters, and wild boar. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to Ribeira Sacra for its hiking trails overlooking the river gorges, boat tours along the Sil River Canyon, mountain biking routes, and opportunities for photography of stunning landscapes. The dramatic viewpoints such as the Balcóns de Madrid and the Castedo viewpoint offer panoramic vistas of the terraced vineyards descending to the river. Ribeira Sacra is also appreciated for its tranquil rural scenery and the blend of cultural and natural heritage, making it an exceptional destination for eco-tourism and cultural tourism alike.
