Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, situated near Mysuru in Karnataka, India, is an ecological haven that spans across a network of small islands on the Kaveri River. First established as a bird sanctuary in 1940, it has become a vital stopover for migratory birds from as far as Siberia, Latin America, and other regions. The sanctuary covers an area of approximately 40 acres and is renowned for its dense population of resident and migratory birds, hosting over 200 species. Besides bird watching, the sanctuary offers boating opportunities that allow visitors to observe the wildlife from close quarters, including crocodiles basking on the riverbanks. The sanctuary's rich biodiversity also includes plant species that are characteristic of the tropical deciduous forest. Historically, it gained significance when ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali advocated for its protection. Visitors find themselves drawn not only to its natural beauty but also to the harmonious ecosystem that supports a plethora of wildlife. Its proximity to Mysuru makes it easily accessible, attracting nature enthusiasts and bird watchers year-round.
