About Peason Ridge Wildlife Management Area

Peason Ridge Wildlife Management Area offers extensive forests, rich habitats, and varied recreational opportunities including hunting, hiking, and wildlife observation in northwestern Louisiana.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in Louisiana's Vernon Parish, Peason Ridge Wildlife Management Area spans over 50,000 acres of primarily pine forest interspersed with hardwoods, hardwood bottoms, and wetland systems. The area was originally a military training site during World War II before transitioning into state-managed wildlife habitat. Its diverse ecosystems provide important habitat for numerous species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, northern bobwhite quail, and various waterfowl. The landscape consists largely of longleaf pine and mixed hardwood forests managed through timber harvest and controlled burns to promote wildlife health and biodiversity. Visitors to Peason Ridge WMA can explore an extensive network of forest roads and trails, offering ample opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. Hunting is a prominent activity, with managed seasons for deer, turkey, squirrel, and waterfowl. Anglers can also find opportunities in local ponds and bayous for bass and bream fishing. The WMA's expansive and relatively remote setting makes it an attractive destination for those seeking solitude and natural beauty away from developed parks. While there are no developed campgrounds, primitive camping is permitted in designated areas, allowing visitors to experience a more rugged outdoor adventure. Peason Ridge WMA is managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and is focused on balancing timber production with habitat management to sustain game populations and diverse wildlife. The area's forest roads provide access points that connect to larger regional recreation routes, making it a key resource for outdoor enthusiasts in the region.
