Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Ormsbee Nature Preserve encompasses approximately 360 acres of forested land and rocky outcrops along the Niagara Escarpment in Monroe County, New York. This preserve is renowned for its steep slopes, rich hardwood forests, and unique geological features characteristic of the escarpment, which forms one of North America’s most striking natural ridges. The preserve is home to varied wildlife including white-tailed deer, red foxes, and an array of bird species such as woodpeckers and warblers. Its ecosystem supports mature northern hardwood trees interspersed with pockets of hemlock and oak. Historically, the area has served as a natural refuge and now functions as a key conservation site managed to protect native flora and fauna and to provide the public with access to outdoor recreation. Hiking is the primary activity here, with trails that offer moderate to strenuous climbs leading to overlooks with views of the Genesee Valley and surrounding countryside. Visitors can enjoy peaceful woodland walks, wildlife watching, and photography opportunities. Ormsbee also holds cultural significance with some evidence of early Native American use of the land. The preserve appeals to locals and nature enthusiasts seeking a quiet retreat from urban areas and those interested in geology, botany, and birdwatching.
