Waterfall Wonder: Lower Falls Park in Rochester, NY
Lower Falls Park is a refreshing natural retreat located in the heart of Rochester, New York. This city park is centered around the breathtaking Lower Falls, a remarkable waterfall that drops approximately 45 feet into the Genesee River. The falls are part of the Genesee River Gorge, carved over thousands of years through layers of limestone and sandstone, which gives the area a rugged, geological character unique to this region. Lush greenery surrounds the gorge rim, creating a scenic contrast to the raw stone cliffs and rushing water.
Visitors to Lower Falls Park will appreciate the park’s intimate setting, with trails and lookout points offering close views of the cascade and the historic stonework along the nearby bridges. While the park itself is modest in size, the power and beauty of the waterfalls make it one of Rochester’s standout natural landmarks. The interplay of rock formations shaped by water erosion and the mature trees forming a canopy above adds to the serene atmosphere.
Historically, the Genesee River and its falls played an important role in Rochester's early industry, powering mills that supported the city’s growth.
