Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Muckross Bay SAC (Special Area of Conservation) is a designated protected area located on the northeastern shore of Lough Leane, within Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland. The site encompasses the bay itself and adjoining coastal habitats, which include a mosaic of tidal mudflats, salt marshes, coastal lagoons, and reed beds. These varied environments provide essential breeding and feeding grounds for numerous bird species, fish, and invertebrates, making it an internationally important wetland. Geographically, Muckross Bay is nestled within the scenic Killarney valley, framed by the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range, adding dramatic topography to the tranquil waters of Lough Leane. Historically, the area has long been valued for its natural resources and cultural heritage, intertwined with the wider Killarney National Park landscape. Recreational opportunities center on birdwatching, nature photography, and gentle walking along the lake shore trails. Anglers can also enjoy fishing along the bay’s edges, where native brown trout and salmon can sometimes be found. Notable landmarks in and near the SAC include the historic Muckross House and Gardens and the Muckross Abbey nearby, which offer cultural context complementary to the natural setting.
