About Mead Wildlife Area

Mead Wildlife Area is a large protected natural area in central Wisconsin, offering extensive habitats for wildlife and a range of outdoor activities including hiking, wildlife watching, and hunting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mead Wildlife Area, located in Marathon County, Wisconsin, encompasses approximately 33,000 acres of diverse habitats including forests, wetlands, grasslands, and river corridors along the Wisconsin River. Established in 1959, the area is managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to conserve wildlife habitat and provide outdoor recreational opportunities. The geography consists of flat to gently rolling terrain which supports a variety of ecosystems, including oak savannas, mixed hardwood forests, marshes, and floodplain wetlands. These environments are home to numerous species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, waterfowl, and endangered bird species like the Cerulean warbler. The Wisconsin River provides important riparian habitat and supports fish populations popular with anglers. Key recreation opportunities include hiking, birdwatching, hunting, fishing, and cross-country skiing during winter. The Mead Wildlife Area features more than 15 miles of maintained trails, observation towers for wildlife viewing, and several designated hunting zones. The area is also known for environmental education programs and is a destination for both casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts. Its proximity to Wausau makes it accessible while retaining a quiet, natural feel. Visitors come to experience Wisconsin’s natural heritage and observe a range of wildlife in their natural settings.
