Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in central Illinois near Decatur, McPherson State Game Production Area encompasses over 1,500 acres of managed wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands dedicated to enhancing wildlife populations and supporting diverse species. The area was established primarily for waterfowl production and conservation and features several restored wetland units, shallow ponds, and prairie zones that provide critical habitat for migratory birds, deer, and small game. It is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, focusing on habitat improvements, including controlled burns and native vegetation plantings to support game and non-game species alike. The landscape is flat to gently rolling, typical of the region, making it accessible for all skill levels. Visitors can engage in seasonal hunting of waterfowl, deer, and upland game, as well as birdwatching, photography, and environmental education. The site is especially popular during fall and spring migrations when bird activity peaks. While there are no formal developed trails, several accessible dirt roads and paths allow for exploration and wildlife viewing. The area is appreciated for its quiet, natural setting within an agricultural landscape, providing a valuable refuge for native wildlife and outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
