Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Maunawili Falls Trail Local Park is located on the windward side of Oahu, Hawaii, providing outdoor enthusiasts with a moderately challenging hiking trail through tropical rainforest leading to Maunawili Falls. The trail spans approximately 3 miles round-trip with a series of sprays, small streams, and diverse native and introduced plant species, including ʻōhiʻa lehua, koa, and various fern varieties. The lush surroundings are home to native bird species like the puaiohi and elepaio. Historically, the area served as part of ancient Hawaiian water systems and lands used sustainably by early inhabitants. Hiking to Maunawili Falls culminates in reaching a 20-30 foot waterfall that flows into a natural pool used for swimming during calmer water conditions. The trail is known for muddy and slippery sections during rainy periods, requiring appropriate footwear and caution. Visitors enjoy a mix of shaded forest paths, glimpses of exotic plants, and cool freshwater streams. Camping is not available inside the park, but nearby options exist. Maunawili Falls Trail is favored for day hikes, nature photography, and refreshing swims. It offers an accessible outdoor escape close to Honolulu while highlighting Hawaii’s rich ecological and cultural heritage.
