About Mapesu Game Reserve

Mapesu Game Reserve is a protected wildlife area in Limpopo province known for its rich biodiversity, panoramic views, and opportunities for game viewing in a relatively undisturbed natural environment.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Mapesu Game Reserve is located in the northern Limpopo province of South Africa, bordering the western edge of the iconic Kruger National Park and two Pan-African protected areas, forming part of the UNESCO Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape. Covering diverse topography from rocky outcrops and hills to open savannah, the reserve is an important conservation area supporting a variety of ecosystems including riverine forests, Mopane woodlands, and mixed bushveld. The reserve is home to numerous large mammals such as elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and a wide range of antelope species, and it is prized for birdwatching with over 350 bird species recorded. The area also features several archaeological sites and historical rock art, reflective of the region’s ancient human occupation. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy guided game drives, day and night wildlife viewing, self-guided hiking, and photographic safaris. The reserve operates eco-friendly campsites, promoting low-impact tourism alongside conservation goals. The scenic hills and the presence of Mapesu Dam provide beautiful vantage points and waterholes attracting wildlife year-round. Visitors are drawn to the reserve's seclusion and natural beauty, offering a quieter alternative to the busier game parks nearby. The reserve is managed with a focus on maintaining habitat integrity and protecting both flora and fauna, making it a key player in regional conservation efforts.
