Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
The Manasquan Reservoir Conservation Area encompasses a 770-acre reservoir surrounded by more than 500 acres of woodlands and wetlands, located in Howell, New Jersey. Created primarily as a water supply reservoir, the area now serves as a valuable habitat for a variety of migratory birds, deer, and aquatic life. Ecologically, it supports mixed hardwood forests, wetland marshes, and open water, making it an important stopover and breeding ground for numerous species including herons, ospreys, and bald eagles. The conservation area is managed by the Monmouth County Park System and features a paved 5-mile loop trail around the reservoir, providing excellent opportunities for hiking, running, biking, and birdwatching. Anglers enjoy fishing for bass, crappie, catfish, and trout stocked seasonally. Kayaking and canoeing are permitted on the reservoir, with boat rentals available nearby. The area also includes a nature center that offers educational programs and environmental workshops. The Manasquan Reservoir Conservation Area is a popular year-round destination due to its easy accessibility and variety of outdoor activities, while serving as an important green space amidst suburban development. It appeals to families, birders, anglers, and anyone seeking a natural retreat close to the New Jersey shore region.
