About Little Ouse Headwaters Project

The Little Ouse Headwaters Project protects and restores the rare fenland habitats surrounding the source of the River Little Ouse, offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife observation and serene walking trails.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Little Ouse Headwaters Project (LOHP) is a collaborative conservation initiative focused on safeguarding the unique fenland habitat located at the source of the River Little Ouse, spanning the border area between Norfolk and Suffolk in England. This area comprises a network of fens, reedbeds, wet meadows, and haylands which are essential to the survival of many rare wetland plants, birds, and invertebrates. The project land includes several nature reserves, multiple parcels of protected fen, and parts of the Waveney & Little Ouse Valley Fens Special Area of Conservation. Historically, these wetlands were subject to drainage and agricultural changes, but the project works to restore and manage water levels to support the fen ecosystems' biodiversity. Visitors can enjoy relatively flat and accessible footpaths that weave through reedbeds and wildflower-rich fen meadows, giving chances to see species such as bitterns, marsh harriers, water rails, and scarce orchids. Interpretation boards and hides enhance wildlife watching. The area also offers peaceful outdoor recreation including birdwatching and photography, drawing nature enthusiasts and local walkers, while promoting awareness of wetland conservation. Key landmarks include the fenland reserves at Blo’ Norton and Thelnetham, along with the reconstructed wetland habitats thriving under the project management. The Little Ouse Headwaters Project emphasizes community engagement and sustainable stewardship toward protecting this fragile and ecologically valuable landscape.
