About Kure Beach Marine Protected Area

Kure Beach Marine Protected Area conserves vital coastal and marine ecosystems off North Carolina’s southern Outer Banks, offering opportunities for beachcombing, boating, and marine wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Kure Beach Marine Protected Area (MPA) is located along the southeastern coast of North Carolina, specifically near Kure Beach in New Hanover County. The MPA encompasses both nearshore waters and portions of the Atlantic Ocean adjacent to the Cape Fear region, focusing on protecting essential marine habitats, such as seagrass beds, oyster reefs, and important fish spawning grounds. Its ecological significance includes serving as a nursery area for several fish species and providing habitat for various invertebrates and migratory marine wildlife. The area is recognized for its role in sustaining local fisheries and enhancing water quality.

Historically, the coastal waters near Kure Beach have been important for commercial fishing and recreation. In recent years, efforts to designate and manage this area as a Marine Protected Area have aimed to balance conservation with continued public use and economic activities. Popular recreational pursuits include fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing along the adjacent surf zone, and beach walking on the nearby shorelines.

Kure Beach MPA is close to Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and the town of Kure Beach, which provide access points for water-based activities. The nearby Fort Fisher Marine Science Center offers educational opportunities related to the local marine environment. The protection measures in place help sustain habitat quality, support biodiversity, and maintain the scenic coastal character that attracts residents and visitors alike. This marine area appeals to nature lovers, anglers, and anyone interested in the health and resilience of North Carolina’s marine ecosystems.
