Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located near Ashford in Kent, Hothfield Heathlands Nature Reserve covers approximately 56 hectares of one of the few remaining lowland heathland habitats in southeast England. The reserve features a mix of heath, wet woodland, scrub, and ponds, supporting a diverse range of wildlife, including rare invertebrates, birds, and plants. Geographically, it lies within a gently undulating landscape, with sandy, acidic soils characteristic of heath environments. Historically, the area was a working heath pasture before becoming protected for conservation in the late 20th century. Managed by Kent Wildlife Trust, the reserve is an important site for preserving species such as the nightjar, tree pipit, and heathland-specific flora including heather and gorse.
