About Grant River Wildlife Area

Grant River Wildlife Area is a protected natural space in southwestern Wisconsin offering diverse habitats for wildlife observation, hunting, and outdoor recreation along the meandering Grant River.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in Grant County, Wisconsin, the Grant River Wildlife Area encompasses over 2,400 acres of forest, wetlands, grasslands, and riverine habitat along the Grant River. This area was established to preserve critical habitat for waterfowl, deer, turkey, and other native species, as well as to provide public opportunities for hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The landscape features a combination of bottomland hardwood forests, upland oak woodlands, and prairie remnants, supporting a wide range of plants and animals characteristic of the Driftless Area. The Grant River runs through the heart of the property, providing excellent fishing for smallmouth bass, northern pike, and channel catfish. Visitors can explore a network of maintained trails and access points designed for hiking, birding, and nature study. The area's wetlands are vital for migratory waterfowl and amphibians, while timber management and prairie restoration projects help maintain ecological diversity. Hunting is a major seasonal activity, with managed deer and upland game bird seasons attracting sportsmen eager to experience Wisconsin’s outdoor heritage. The Grant River Wildlife Area’s quiet environment and variety of habitats make it a cherished destination for naturalists and anglers looking to connect with the Driftless Region’s unique ecosystems.
