Established in 1854, the fort played a vital role in the protection of emigrants, mail coaches, and freight wagons on the trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio-El Paso Road and the Chihuahua Trail. The site covers over 460 acres and offers visitors a comprehensive understanding of the frontier military life between 1854 and 1891.
