About Fermilab Prairie Restoration

Fermilab Prairie Restoration protects and revitalizes tallgrass prairie habitat within the Fermilab national laboratory grounds in Illinois, offering opportunities for nature observation and ecological study.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Fermilab Prairie Restoration is an ecological conservation effort spanning approximately 6,800 acres within the Fermilab facility near Batavia, Illinois. Originally farmland, the site has been restored to one of the largest tallgrass prairie habitats in the Chicago region, serving as a significant refuge for native plants and wildlife. The restoration began in the late 1960s and continues to be managed through prescribed burns, invasive species control, and reseeding efforts to maintain the integrity of the prairie ecosystem. This prairie supports hundreds of native grasses, wildflowers, and over 200 bird species, including bobolinks, meadowlarks, and grassland sparrows, as well as mammals like coyotes and white-tailed deer.

Geographically, the prairie lies in northeastern Illinois, featuring gently rolling terrain with open grasslands and scattered woodlands. Its restoration serves as an important example of Midwestern prairie conservation and provides valuable habitat for several species dependent on this ecosystem. Visitors can explore a network of trails accessible to hikers and bird watchers, with interpretive signage explaining the ecology and restoration process.

While Fermilab is primarily a scientific research facility and access is sometimes limited, the prairie area is open to the public during daylight hours for self-guided exploration. Visitors appreciate the expansive views of blooming wildflowers in summer and the quiet, natural setting not far from Chicago's suburbs. Educational programs and volunteer opportunities are offered to engage the community in prairie stewardship. The Fermilab Prairie Restoration stands out as a model of how land once used for agriculture and science can be thoughtfully returned to a vibrant natural state.
