About Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a protected rural landscape offering rolling chalk hills, extensive woodlands, and scenic walking and cycling routes. It provides rich opportunities for outdoor recreation amid historic villages and diverse wildlife habitats.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Chilterns AONB spans approximately 833 square kilometers across parts of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Bedfordshire in South East England. Characterized by its rolling chalk escarpments, steep valleys, beech woodlands, and chalk grasslands, it supports important biodiversity including rare orchids, butterflies, and a variety of bird species. The area has a rich cultural heritage with ancient hill forts such as Ivinghoe Beacon, historic market towns, traditional pubs, and quaint villages like Turville and Hambleden. The Chilterns is renowned for its network of public footpaths and bridleways, including sections of the Ridgeway National Trail, one of Britain’s oldest long-distance paths. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, cycling, horse riding, and birdwatching, while historic sites and local events provide cultural enrichment. The Chilterns also contain notable landmarks like Hughenden Manor, former home of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, and the ancient Wendover Woods. The gentle landscape and proximity to London make the Chilterns a popular destination for day trips and weekend escapes. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the chalk habitats and managing woodland to maintain biodiversity and landscape character. Overall, the Chilterns AONB offers a diverse natural and cultural experience with scenic views, rich wildlife, and accessible outdoor activities for visitors of all ages and interests.
