About Cajas National Park

Cajas National Park is a rugged high-altitude protected area in southern Ecuador known for its glacial lakes, páramo ecosystems, and diverse wildlife, offering excellent hiking and nature observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Cajas National Park is located in the Andean region of Ecuador, approximately 30 kilometers west of Cuenca. Established in 1996, it spans high elevations between 3,100 and 4,450 meters (10,170 to 14,600 feet) across the Cajas mountain range. The park features over 200 glacial lakes and lagoons carved from ancient glaciers, surrounded by páramo moorland, cloud forests, and high-altitude grasslands. The unique landscape is shaped by its volcanic and glacial origins, creating dramatic jagged peaks, deep valleys, and wetland areas rich in biodiversity. The páramo ecosystem supports rare and endemic flora such as frailejones and polylepis trees, while fauna includes species like the spectacled bear, Andean condor, white-tailed deer, and various amphibians and birds. Visitors are attracted to the park for its extensive network of well-marked hiking trails that range from short loops around lakes to multi-day treks connecting scenic vistas and archaeological sites. Among the highlights are the Toreadora Lagoon, a favorite fishing spot, and the refuge areas known as Tres Cruces and Llaviucu that provide shelter and rest for visitors. The park has cultural significance as well, with traces of pre-Incan and Incan activity nearby. Outdoor enthusiasts value Cajas for its cool, fresh climate, stunning panoramic views, and the opportunities for birdwatching, trout fishing, and mountain biking. Accessibility from Cuenca makes it a popular destination for day trips and longer excursions, suited to those interested in exploring Ecuador’s Andean highlands and their fragile ecosystems.
