About Broken Head Nature Reserve

Broken Head Nature Reserve is a coastal protected area in New South Wales known for its subtropical rainforest, pristine beaches, and rich biodiversity. It offers tranquil hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities close to the ocean.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Broken Head Nature Reserve is located on the Far North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, approximately 10 kilometers south of Byron Bay. The reserve covers coastal rainforest and headlands that rise sharply from the ocean, providing stunning views over the Pacific Ocean. It protects significant remnants of lowland subtropical rainforest, rare in the region, and is a habitat for numerous native fauna such as the powerful owl, red-legged pademelon, and a variety of bird species including the rose-crowned fruit dove. The reserve's geography includes rocky headlands, sandy beaches, and small freshwater creeks. Originally inhabited by the Bundjalung people, the land maintains cultural significance alongside its environmental importance. Visitors enjoy hiking through shaded trails that wind through lush rainforest and periodically open up to scenic lookout points above wave-battered cliffs. The reserve's Broken Head Beach is popular for surfing and swimming, with the adjacent marine reserve providing protection to coastal ecosystems. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts appreciate the reserve for its relatively undisturbed habitat. Its proximity to Byron Bay makes it accessible yet peaceful, providing a contrast to busy tourist areas. Conservation efforts focus on controlling invasive species and maintaining the delicate balance between natural environments and visitor impact. Overall, Broken Head Nature Reserve is a valuable coastal sanctuary offering opportunities for low-impact recreation, education, and wildlife appreciation.
