Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Broad Brook Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located in the town of Reading in southern Vermont and comprises a mix of wetlands, forested hills, and open fields spanning over 2,500 acres. The landscape features swampy areas alongside Broad Brook, which supports a rich variety of native flora and fauna. The area is managed by Vermont Fish & Wildlife to preserve habitat for waterfowl, deer, small game, and songbirds. Historically, the land has been used for timber and farming but now serves as an important conservation site. Visitors can experience a quiet wilderness with several miles of unmarked trails and informal pathways ideal for hiking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing during winter months. Wildlife commonly seen includes white-tailed deer, beavers, and a variety of waterfowl and migratory birds, especially in the extensive wetland portions. Anglers may find opportunities for fishing in the brook's waters. The area lacks developed facilities, offering a more primitive and natural outdoor experience. Its proximity to small towns like Reading and Woodstock makes it accessible while maintaining a secluded feel. Broad Brook WMA attracts visitors looking for solitude, nature photography, and educational wildlife observation. The area's ecological value combined with low-impact recreational use supports conservation goals and outdoor enjoyment.
