About Braddocks Bay Wildlife Management Area

Braddocks Bay Wildlife Management Area in New York offers rich opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and fishing along its shoreline and wetlands at the eastern edge of Lake Ontario.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Braddocks Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is a 3,107-acre protected natural habitat located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in Monroe County, New York. Characterized by diverse wetlands, marshes, and open water, the area serves as a crucial stopover for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds. The WMA's geography includes shallow bays, sandy beaches, swamps, and tidal marshes that support a wide range of plant and animal species. It is part of the larger Eastern Lake Ontario wetlands, important for both resident wildlife and seasonal visitors. Historically, the land was acquired and managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to protect waterfowl habitat and maintain public access for outdoor recreation. Braddocks Bay WMA’s natural setting is popular for birdwatching, especially during fall and spring migrations when species such as Canada geese, herons, and various ducks are abundant. Anglers are drawn to the bay for its fishing prospects including bass and panfish. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore several trails and shoreline walks, while water-based activities like kayaking and canoeing are possible in the sheltered bay waters. The WMA also supports regulated hunting in appropriate seasons, primarily for waterfowl. Its proximity to the Rochester metropolitan area adds convenience for day visits. The area's low human disturbance levels, combined with its ranking as an Important Bird Area, make it a valued resource for conservation and recreation. Visitors appreciate the peaceful environment and opportunities for wildlife observation in a diverse aquatic and wetland ecosystem.
