Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Borakalalo Game Reserve is located approximately 120 kilometers northwest of Pretoria, South Africa, spanning 13,400 hectares of protected savanna, wetlands, and woodlands. Established primarily to protect wildlife and offer a wilderness experience, the reserve is home to numerous species including lions, leopards, cheetahs, African wild dogs, buffalo, kudu, and numerous bird species, especially waterfowl in the extensive wetland systems. The reserve’s landscape includes the Crocodile River and associated flood plains, which provide critical water sources for animals and offer excellent opportunities for bird watching and fishing. The reserve aims to balance wildlife conservation with visitor recreation, providing several lookout points, picnic spots, and hides for wildlife observation.
