About Blue Hill Heritage Trust

Blue Hill Heritage Trust is a land conservation organization in coastal Maine that protects forests, farmland, and trails, offering diverse outdoor recreation opportunities in a scenic natural setting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Blue Hill Heritage Trust (BHHT) is a prominent land conservation nonprofit based in the Blue Hill Peninsula of Hancock County, Maine. Established to protect and steward lands of ecological, agricultural, and recreational significance, BHHT conserves more than 5,100 acres of forests, farms, wetlands, and shoreline in a largely rural coastal environment. The area’s varied geography includes rugged hills, dense woodlands, tidal waters, and fertile farmlands that support vibrant ecosystems. It provides critical habitats for many native species including bobcats, otters, and various migratory birds. The trust maintains an extensive network of public trails totaling approximately 40 miles, drawing hikers, bird watchers, mountain bikers, and paddlers alike. Notable landmarks within the properties include the Summit Road Trail offering panoramic views over Blue Hill Bay and Blue Hill Mountain, as well as the trails around the historic Robinson Woods. The trust’s effort in land protection has also preserved working farms that contribute to the area’s rural character and local food production. Visitors are drawn to the blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty, with opportunities for quiet exploration, photography, and seasonal activities such as maple sugaring and fall foliage viewing. BHHT serves as a critical steward for the peninsula’s natural landscape, ensuring that the area's ecological integrity and outdoor access remain intact for future generations.
