About Barmah National Park

Barmah National Park is Victoria's largest river red gum forest, providing a rich environment for wildlife and offering diverse outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, birdwatching, and boating along the Murray River.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Barmah National Park is located in northern Victoria along the Murray River, covering approximately 28,866 hectares of Australia's largest river red gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) forest. The park operates as an important refuge for numerous native plants and animals, including many waterbirds, mammals, reptiles, and fish species. The unique floodplain ecosystem depends on seasonal flooding, which sustains its ecology and supports traditional Aboriginal uses. Historically, Barmah is part of the traditional land of the Yorta Yorta people, whose cultural heritage remains strongly connected to the park. Visitors are drawn to Barmah National Park for its excellent recreational opportunities, including camping, walking, mountain biking, canoeing, and fishing. Key landmarks include the extensive river red gum forests, the wetlands, and the Murray River itself, which flows through the park, providing scenic vistas and access for water-based activities. The forest offers a peaceful natural environment, birdwatching hotspots, and trails that range from easy walks to more challenging rides. The park also provides ample space for picnicking and exploring Aboriginal cultural sites. Barmah's combination of rich biodiversity, cultural significance, and outdoor adventure make it a popular destination for nature lovers and families seeking a serene riverine environment close to Melbourne and regional towns.
