About Axios–Loudias–Aliakmonas National Park

Axios–Loudias–Aliakmonas National Park is a vital wetland ecosystem located in northern Greece, offering rich biodiversity and excellent opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, and ecological study.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Axios–Loudias–Aliakmonas National Park is one of Greece’s largest and most important wetland protected areas, encompassing the deltas and floodplains of the Axios, Loudias, and Aliakmonas rivers. Located in Central Macedonia near the Thermaic Gulf, the park covers an extensive area of wetlands, marshes, reed beds, and agricultural landscapes that support a diverse range of flora and fauna. The park plays a critical role as a resting and breeding site for migratory birds along the Via Egnatia flyway, hosting species such as Dalmatian pelicans, ferruginous ducks, and black-winged stilts. It is recognized internationally under the Ramsar Convention and the Natura 2000 program for its ecological significance.

The geography includes broad river deltas flowing into the northern Aegean Sea, interspersed with lagoons and channels that create prime habitat for fish, amphibians, and waterfowl. Visitors can explore nature trails and observation towers designed for wildlife viewing, particularly ideal for ornithologists and photographers. Recreational activities focus on hiking, birdwatching, and educational tours guided by local ecologists.

Historically, the wetland has supported traditional rice cultivation and fishing, practices that coexist with conservation efforts to protect the ecosystem. The park’s proximity to cities like Thessaloniki makes it accessible for day trips or weekend excursions. Its blend of natural beauty, wildlife diversity, and cultural heritage attract both researchers and outdoor enthusiasts interested in ecology and landscape photography.
