About Antsokay Arboretum

Antsokay Arboretum is a unique botanical reserve near Toliara, Madagascar, dedicated to the preservation of the region's exceptional spiny forest ecosystem and endemic flora, offering visitors a rare glimpse of Madagascar's dryland biodiversity.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located approximately 10 kilometers southeast of the city of Toliara in southwestern Madagascar, Antsokay Arboretum covers an area of about 40 hectares. The arboretum was established in 1980 with the mission of conserving and showcasing the unique and fragile flora of the Madagascar spiny forest region, one of the world's most distinctive dryland ecosystems. The landscape is characterized by thorny, drought-resistant vegetation including various endemic succulent species, baobabs, and other native trees. Ecologically, the arboretum is home to several rare and endangered plant species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth. While primarily a conservation and research site, Antsokay Arboretum also offers outdoor enthusiasts opportunities for guided walking tours through well-marked nature trails that highlight the botanical diversity and ecological adaptations to arid climates. The site also hosts a small museum and educational center where visitors can learn about Madagascar’s unique biodiversity and conservation challenges. The arboretum plays an essential role in regional environmental education and sustainable tourism. Visitors often enjoy spotting native reptiles, birds, and insects that inhabit the spiny forest. The arboretum’s dry, warm climate makes it suitable for year-round visits, although the cooler and less rainy months from April to November are generally preferred. Antsokay offers a quiet, immersive outdoor experience far from Madagascar's more crowded parks, appealing to botanists, naturalists, and ecotourists interested in dry forest conservation. Nearby Toliara provides logistical support including accommodations and transport access to the arboretum.
