About Royal Gorge Canyon

Royal Gorge Canyon is a dramatic, steep-walled gorge carved by the Arkansas River in Colorado, offering exceptional rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and scenic views.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Royal Gorge Canyon is a striking natural feature located near Cañon City, Colorado, where the Arkansas River has carved a deep and narrow gorge approximately 1,250 feet deep. The canyon's vertical granite walls soar dramatically above the river, creating one of the most spectacular river canyons in the United States. Geographically, the gorge exposes Precambrian granite and metamorphic rock that date back billions of years, providing a rugged and raw backdrop for outdoor recreation. The Royal Gorge area is home to diverse plant communities including ponderosa pine forests on the rim and riparian vegetation along the river corridor. Wildlife includes bighorn sheep, mule deer, golden eagles, and peregrine falcons, some of which are protected species in the area. Historically, the gorge was a vital transportation corridor for railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and remnants of these rail lines can still be found. Visitors are drawn to Royal Gorge for its combination of thrilling recreational activities including world-class rock climbing routes on sheer granite cliffs, challenging whitewater rafting on Arkansas River’s Class III-IV rapids, and the iconic Royal Gorge Bridge – one of the highest suspension bridges in the world, which spans the canyon at over 1,200 feet above the river. Hiking trails along the rim provide panoramic views, and the gorge is also a popular site for photography, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing. The area's unique geography and recreation opportunities make it a must-visit location for adventure seekers and nature lovers.
