About West River Trail State Forest

West River Trail State Forest in Vermont offers a scenic riverside corridor ideal for hiking, wildlife viewing, and paddling along a historic rail-trail route.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

West River Trail State Forest is located in southeastern Vermont and is centered around the West River, which flows through a lush river valley. The forest comprises a linear corridor following the former West River Railroad bed, now a multi-use trail that runs approximately 16 miles from Brattleboro to Jamaica. This corridor protects riparian habitats, mixed hardwood forests, and important wetland areas that support a variety of bird species, mammals, and aquatic life. Established to conserve natural landscapes while providing outdoor recreation, the property offers visitors opportunities to hike, bike, paddle, and fish in an accessible riverside setting. The trail connects several small historic towns and crosses numerous wooden trestles and bridges that showcase early Vermont industrial-era infrastructure. The forest is managed with an emphasis on maintaining the natural vegetation and wildlife habitats along the river corridor, while encouraging responsible recreational use. Fishing for native brook trout is popular in the West River and its tributaries. Seasonal paddling also attracts canoeists and kayakers, especially during spring runoff and early summer. Wildlife such as white-tailed deer, beaver, otter, and a variety of songbirds are regularly seen. With gently rolling terrain, peaceful water views, and well-maintained trail conditions, West River Trail State Forest provides a scenic and accessible outdoor experience that highlights Vermont’s rural natural heritage.
