About Santanoni Preserve

Santanoni Preserve is a historic Adirondack Great Camp offering a blend of cultural heritage and wilderness recreation deep within New York's Adirondack Park.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Santanoni Preserve comprises the renowned Santanoni Great Camp, an estate built in the late 19th century for wealthy industrialist Robert C. Pruyn. Situated in the Adirondack Park in northern New York, it covers a unique combination of historic architecture and natural forest landscape within the Santanoni Preserve Wild Forest area. The preserve features rugged terrain, including dense boreal forests, hardwood ridges, pristine lakes, and streams. Visitors access the site primarily via hiking and paddling routes that penetrate deep into the forested landscape, offering opportunities for solitude and exploration. The Great Camp includes several significant buildings constructed with local materials, showcasing Adirondack Rustic style architecture, with the main lodge, guest cabins, boathouses, and service buildings. Santanoni's history reflects the social and cultural patterns of Adirondack vacation life during the Gilded Age, now managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Adirondack Museum. Outdoor recreation at Santanoni Preserve includes hiking, camping, paddling on remote waterways, wildlife watching, and photography. The preserve is recognized both for its historical preservation and as a wilderness destination away from heavily trafficked areas. Routes such as the Santanoni Range Trail and access to nearby peaks emphasize the area's appeal to backpackers and experienced hikers. The preserve’s remoteness and historical structures draw visitors interested in New York's Adirondack heritage alongside natural beauty and diverse forest ecosystems.
