About Goodwin State Forest

Goodwin State Forest is a large conservation and recreation area in northeastern Connecticut offering extensive hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing opportunities amid diverse forest ecosystems.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Goodwin State Forest spans over 18,000 acres across Windham and Tolland counties in northeastern Connecticut. Established in 1924, it is one of the largest state forests in Connecticut and features a variety of habitats including mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and old farmland. The forest’s rolling hills, streams, and ponds create a serene setting for outdoor activities year-round. Visitors enjoy more than 40 miles of maintained trails that cater to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. One of the forest’s prominent features is the Nipmuck Trail, a blue-blazed hiking trail that connects to regional trail systems and offers scenic views and access to small waterfalls and historic stone walls. Goodwin State Forest is also home to the Goodwin Dam and surrounding wetland areas that provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching and fishing. The forest’s varied terrain supports wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous songbirds, making it a prime location for nature observation. Historically, the area was heavily logged and farmed before becoming protected, and remnants of agricultural history can be found throughout the forest. Seasonal activities include snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. The forest offers rustic camping spots and day-use areas, catering to both casual visitors and more adventurous outdoor enthusiasts. Goodwin State Forest’s extensive trail network, natural beauty, and range of recreational opportunities make it a significant resource for residents and visitors seeking immersion in Connecticut’s natural landscapes.
