About Ganaraska Forest Conservation Area

Ganaraska Forest Conservation Area is Ontario’s largest managed forest offering extensive outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, biking, and horseback riding across diverse woodland and wetland habitats.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ganaraska Forest Conservation Area, located in southern Ontario near Port Hope, spans over 11,000 acres of primarily second-growth forest. Originally established to combat erosion and restore degraded farmland, it has grown into a well-managed landscape dominated by coniferous and mixed hardwood stands, wetlands, and ponds. The forest supports a variety of wildlife species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, foxes, and numerous bird species, making it popular for wildlife observation. Historically, the Ganaraska Forest was part of a large reforestation effort in the early 20th century to restore natural cover to the area. Today, the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority manages the area with a focus on conservation, sustainable forestry, and recreation. Visitors can enjoy over 90 kilometers of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding, along with picnic areas and fishing spots in small lakes and ponds. Notable landmarks include the scenic Cranberry Marsh Wetland, a key ecological feature supporting diverse plant life and bird populations, and lookout points that offer tranquil forest vistas. As one of Ontario’s premier outdoor destinations combining forest regeneration, habitat protection, and year-round recreation, Ganaraska Forest Conservation Area offers accessible nature experiences close to urban centers while maintaining quiet natural settings ideal for solitude and exploration.
