About Delta National Forest

Delta National Forest is the only bottomland hardwood national forest in the United States, offering unique wetland ecosystems and opportunities for outdoor activities like hunting, bird watching, and hiking.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1936, Delta National Forest covers over 60,000 acres of lush wetlands in the Mississippi Delta region. Comprised chiefly of bottomland hardwoods, it provides critical habitat for waterfowl, migratory birds, and various wildlife species. The forest's flat terrain and extensive bayous are prime for kayaking and fishing. Historically, this area has been used by diverse cultures, adding a rich cultural layer to its natural beauty. The forest's defining hydrology sometimes leads to seasonal flooding, reviving its nutrient-rich soil, which supports rich biodiversity. Visitors are drawn to its serene natural environment, making it a popular destination for hunting, especially for white-tailed deer and duck. It's a tranquil location for those seeking escape and solace amidst towering trees and abundant wildlife. The forest's trails, though limited, provide immersive experiences in its verdant landscapes.
