About Cuetzalan Cloud Forest

Cuetzalan Cloud Forest is a lush, mist-covered tropical montane forest in Puebla, Mexico, celebrated for its extraordinary biodiversity, enchanting waterfalls, and vibrant indigenous culture.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the northeastern Sierra Norte of Puebla, Cuetzalan Cloud Forest is a critical segment of the Mesoamerican biological corridor, harboring a rich diversity of flora and fauna unique to high-altitude tropical environments. The forest thrives under near-constant cloud cover, creating a humid, moss-laden ecosystem that sustains rare epiphytes, orchids, bromeliads, and countless species of birds, amphibians, and mammals. Its geographic setting ranges from 1,200 to 2,300 meters above sea level, characterized by steep slopes, deep ravines, and numerous cascading waterfalls such as Cascada Las Brisas and Cascada de las Minas. Historically, the area has been home to Totonac and Nahua indigenous peoples, whose ancestral villages, like the town of Cuetzalan, remain vibrant cultural centers blending traditional customs, agriculture, and eco-tourism. Visitors are drawn to the cloud forest for hiking on trails that wind through dense vegetation, exploring archaeological caves with pre-Hispanic petroglyphs, and engaging with local weaving and coffee cultivation traditions. Recreational activities include guided nature walks, birdwatching—highlighting species like the Resplendent Quetzal and horned guans—and visiting natural pools used for swimming. The region offers a mystical, serene experience framed by mist, sound of rushing water, and rich cultural heritage, appealing especially to eco-tourists and adventure seekers looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination.
