Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Boscawen Town Forest is a municipally managed green space located in the central part of Boscawen, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Covering an area of roughly 300 acres, the forest preserves a combination of mixed deciduous and coniferous woodlands that provide habitat for local wildlife including deer, various songbirds, and small mammals. The terrain is gentle with rolling hills, small wetlands, and several clearings, making it accessible for visitors of all skill levels. Historically, the forestland was left to the town for conservation and public enjoyment, maintaining its natural character with minimal development. Visitors can explore over 5 miles of maintained trails that wind through the woods, offering opportunities for hiking, trail running, cross-country skiing in winter, and snowshoeing. The forest is also a favored spot for birdwatchers due to its diversity of bird species associated with the forest and wetland habitats. There are a few small streams running through parts of the forest that add to the scenic quality and support diverse plant life. Boscawen Town Forest does not have camping facilities but serves as a peaceful day-use area for outdoor enthusiasts, nature photographers, and those looking to connect with nature near town. As a conservation demonstration area, it also supports natural resource education and low-impact recreation. Parking is available at trailhead access points near the forest edges, and signage helps visitors navigate the trail system. The forest’s proximity to the town center makes it a convenient natural retreat for locals and visitors alike.
